NRMCA awards CEMEX USA for outstanding community and environmental efforts
September 26, 2022
Ready Mix USA, a CEMEX company, was named the 2022 recipient of the Concrete Cares Award by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) for the company’s commitment to building a better future in the communities in which it operates through ongoing service, education and environmental efforts.
The Concrete Cares Award recognizes the positive impact ready mix companies have in their hometowns across the U.S. The East Tennessee Division of Ready Mix USA earned accolades for operations that produce more than 250,000 cubic yards of concrete annually. The team was also recognized for its work with Socially Equal Energy Efficient Development (SEEED), a local non-profit organization in Knoxville, Tennessee.
This is the second year CEMEX has received the Concrete Cares Award, first winning the award in 2019. In 2022, Ready Mix USA earned the award for working on SEEED’s Solar Home of the Future, the organization’s first solar home.
Ready Mix USA collaborates with SEEED to address the high poverty rate affecting the Black population in Knoxville. SEEED works to eliminate poverty in the community by providing career readiness training, environmental education and community engagement programs.
“Ready Mix USA would not be able to do the work it does if it wasn’t for the people,” said CEMEX Mid-South Regional President Marc Tyson. “It is important that we not only provide quality service but also make positive social and environmental contributions in the communities we serve.”
The home was built with CEMEX's lower-carbon concrete, Vertua®, on the footers, helping reduce the CO2 footprint of those elements of the house by approximately 40%. The home benefits from superior insulation, strength, durability and energy efficiency of concrete.
The house also features solar panels, a backup solar battery, microgrid circuit, tankless water heater and smart home technology, which drastically reduce the home’s carbon footprint and utility bills. The home is in the Lonsdale neighborhood and will be sold below market value to a low-income family to promote generational wealth.
In addition to providing discounted and donated materials for the project, our Neyland Drive concrete plant team gave SEEED students a plant tour. The tour provided students with the opportunity to learn about concrete manufacturing and careers in the industry.
“This project demonstrates how, when we work together, we can address multiple issues simultaneously – climate adaptation, poverty, social equity, and unemployment,” said CEMEX Sustainability & Social Impact Manager Chase Hively. “By collaborating with organizations like SEEED, Ready Mix USA is creating shared value and helping to build a better and more sustainable future for the communities we serve.”
NRMCA presented the Concrete Cares Award to Ready Mix USA on March 17 at its 2022 Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas. The NRMCA also made a $1,000 donation to SEEED in CEMEX’s name.
