At CEMEX, our environmental philosophy is based on the belief that the world we share is given to us in trust.
Corporate environmental responsibility is the foundation of all that we are and all that we do.
This commitment translates into tangible outcomes that make the people of CEMEX proud partners with communities, such as in Knoxville Tennessee. Our Knoxville Cement plant has teamed with local environmental and civic groups to create a bird sanctuary on an island on the plant's property. Perches were erected to provide nesting areas for Ospreys. Custom bird boxes constructed by a local High School have been erected to attract migratory Wood Ducks.
CEMEX's Davenport plant is an environmental steward of its forestlands. And is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council - Rainforest Alliance, a global nonprofit conservation organization. Each year CEMEX plants 20,000 redwood seedlings to promote a sustainable forest. This is but one of CEMEX's conservation initiatives that reflect our ever-growing commitment to sustainable development and the environment.
The Wampum Quarry Project accomplished an important advance in wetland restoration with the reclamation of 138 acres of land. The planting of over 75,000 tree seedlings and over 80 species of vegetation ensure the development of a structurally diverse habitat - including tree snags and boulders placed in the wetlands to increase wildlife use, along with exposed rocks, cascades, plunge pool areas and seven butterfly gardens.but that's not all.the area was stocked with over 4,000 fish, tadpoles, snails and crayfish.
But our commitment extends well beyond the reclamation of our lands. We are committed to strengthening our environmental performance so that we may continue to be good stewards of the Earth. And our efforts across the U.S. are being recognized across the spectrum.CEMEX USA was recognized for its outstanding contributions to environmental protection and conservation awareness at the first-ever EcoVision Conference in Washington D.C. in April 2007.
The Knoxville, Tennessee plant won the Portland Cement Association's and Cement America Magazine's prestigious Cement Industry Environmental and Energy Award for outstanding contributions in stewardship and innovation.
Out of all of the concrete plants in the United States, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) awarded our Apache Junction, Ariz., plant with the Environmental Excellence Award, Best Ready-Mix Plant. Ready Mix operations in the Carolinas. Florida and Texas were recognized for environmental excellence as well. And our Arizona operations were awarded the 2006 Environmental Leadership award from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association.
CEMEX is committed to balancing materials demand with a commitment to environmental sustainability. Our Davenport, California, Louisville, Kentucky, and Clinchfield, Georgia cement plants were awarded the 2007 ENERGY STAR Rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. This award recognizes that they are among the most energy efficient plants in the industry.
And on the world stage, CEMEX received the World Environmental Center's Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement - underscoring our commitment to environmental protection and a sustainable future for our industry.
Overall.since 2001, CEMEX's U.S. operations has received more than 49 Environmental awards.
Because of our deep commitment to preserving and improving the ecologies in which we operate, CEMEX devotes considerable resources to environmental quality efforts.
